Poor Zune. Poor Microsoft. Well, not really. But seriously, where did the hype and buzz go? One day the usual MS shills were trying hard to crank up the volume, the next day it disappeared like the Statue of Liberty at the hands of David Copperfield…
What killed the buzz so mightily? The console wars. And woe be to Microsoft, XBOX360 is getting ZERO attention! Playstation 3 and Wii have swooped in to capture more mind-share than anyone had expected only a year ago. Even the iPod is off the radar for now. But don’t worry Bill and Steve! You’ll both be back square on Christmas lists very shortly. Why? Simple. There are no more PS3’s or Wii’s to go around!!! Sony and Nintendo are potentially victims of their own success. They should’ve hit the market around late Summer, then ramped up production according to response. As of now, Sony and Nintendo have certainly gotten loads of attention and lusting fans, but for big ticket items, the spending money will be all gone come Spring, when they get more product on the market. There’s little shortage of games (unit-wise) for sale, though the number of launch titles is typically sparse. But even if they had more titles on the market, the result is the same. Game shelves will be full, but console spaces on the shelves will be collecting cobwebs next to the lonely label.
Cry me a river. Looks like a lot of folks will get that iPod finally. After this year, everyone will have one. There’s no shortage of those. And Zune? Why bother? iTunes already has the biggest selection of stuff, particularly in the US store.
Expect to see the sad little Zune getting bundled with Vista systems next Spring. Not unlike the ill-fated, and stupidly-named, Dell DJ’s last death throws. In the end Dell couldn’t even give them away. Zune will face the same fate. Microsoft is still trying to be cool, but the only place they’ve ever come close was with the XBOX and it took the success of Halo and Halo2 to really make XBOX matter.
Now let’s just see if Nintendo can get the Vapor-Ware title Legend of Zelda: the Twilight Princess out the door before Duke Nukem Forever reaches store shelves…
