Other World Computing, long a well-priced reseller of stuff for your mac that works right, like RAM and HD upgrades, etc… has treated me well many times when I ordered from them. Well, now they’re introducing something surprising. Surprising not just because of its form-factor and interface paradigm, but also because it may signal a new trend or even a return to the past. Long ago Apple had almost made the IBM move and through licensing out production of Macs to 3rd parties almost lost the hardware business to those companies. Well, at the same time, there have always been 3rd party modMacs sold. In particular touch-screen enabled iMacs for kiosk settings. Now there is something new on the horizon…The ModBook! Though definitely it will be higher priced than comparably powered standard MacBooks and MacBook Pros, this tablet style Mac will definitely find the niche that Bill Gates has been rambling on about for a decade or more. It purports to have a stylus interface with drawing and handwriting capabilities. If Wacom is not involved, and provided the markup is reasonable, Wacom can kiss it goodbye with their ridiculous over-pricing!
For those who’ve never tried it, InkWell is a technology that is already in all Macs today and allows wonderful writing and drawing capability with an external tablet. In addition, OS X has long had a sort of secret feature for changing the screen orientation from landscape to portrait for a LONG LONG TIME.
Digital artists will not be the only market for this puppy either. You can easily anticipate exciting applications in industry! Think about it. This year’s MacWorld is gonna be cool!
